The most common mistake foreign brands make when entering Chinese social media: they treat it like a translation project. Take the Instagram strategy, translate the captions to Chinese, post on WeChat, done. This approach fails almost universally — and wastes significant budget in the process.
Chinese social platforms aren't just foreign apps with different names. Each has a distinct culture, content format, algorithm logic, and commercial ecosystem. Choosing wrong means spending 12 months building an audience that doesn't convert — or worse, that actively associates your brand with "low effort."
The Six Platforms, Briefly
Before picking where to invest, you need to understand what each platform actually is:
WeChat (微信) — The Backbone
WeChat is not a social network in the Western sense — it's the operating system of daily life in China. Messaging, payments, mini-programs, official accounts, video content, and customer service all live here. For brands, WeChat is the CRM layer: where you retain, re-engage, and convert the audience you build elsewhere. You don't "go viral" on WeChat — you nurture.
Xiaohongshu / RED (小红书) — The Discovery Engine
Think Pinterest meets product review platform. Users come to Xiaohongshu to research purchases — beauty, lifestyle, food, travel, fashion. A single authentic note (post) from a nano-KOC can drive more conversions than a paid campaign. For premium foreign brands targeting urban Chinese women, Xiaohongshu is often the highest-ROI starting point.
Douyin (抖音) — The Algorithm Machine
Douyin is TikTok's older, more commercially sophisticated sibling — operated separately in China with deep e-commerce integration. The algorithm is extremely powerful at finding niche audiences, but content production demands are high. Douyin rewards consistency and production quality; a sporadic brand account rarely breaks through.
Weibo (微博) — PR & Cultural Moments
Weibo is China's Twitter/X equivalent, but with a stronger entertainment and celebrity culture. It's the platform where trending topics live and where PR campaigns around cultural events (festivals, celebrity partnerships, product launches) play out publicly. Less powerful for sustained community building, but essential for brand moments.
Bilibili (B站) — The Depth Platform
Bilibili is where Chinese Gen Z goes for long-form content — documentary-style brand films, detailed product reviews, educational content. The community is highly engaged and rewards authenticity over polish. For tech, gaming, automotive, or lifestyle brands targeting younger Chinese consumers, Bilibili builds the deepest brand associations.
Zhihu (知乎) — The Authority Layer
Zhihu is China's Quora — a Q&A platform dominated by educated, high-income professionals. Content here is detailed, evidence-based, and long. It's not a mass platform, but it punches far above its user count: Zhihu content is heavily indexed by Chinese search engines and is a primary source for Chinese AI models. Publishing authoritative content on Zhihu boosts both SEO and GEO.
How to Choose: A Decision Framework
The right platform mix depends on three things: category, audience, and stage of market entry.
Category matters most
- Beauty & skincare: Xiaohongshu first, then Douyin for scale, WeChat for retention.
- Fashion & lifestyle: Xiaohongshu + Douyin + WeChat mini-program store.
- Food & beverage: Douyin (food content performs exceptionally) + Weibo for launches.
- Tech & consumer electronics: Bilibili (in-depth reviews) + Zhihu + WeChat.
- Luxury: WeChat (private luxury experience) + Xiaohongshu (aspirational content) + Weibo (cultural moments).
- B2B / professional services: Zhihu + WeChat official account. Douyin and Xiaohongshu are rarely relevant.
Don't launch everywhere at once
The brands we've seen fail most dramatically in China tried to be active on all platforms simultaneously with a small team. They produced mediocre content everywhere instead of excellent content somewhere. Start with two platforms maximum — typically one discovery platform (Xiaohongshu or Douyin) and WeChat as the CRM layer. Add more once you have content operations running smoothly.
For a European cosmetics brand we launched in China in 2024, we started with Xiaohongshu only for the first 4 months — 60 seeded posts from nano-KOCs, zero paid promotion. By month 4, they had 12,000 organic followers and inbound inquiry from Tmall flagged the brand for shelf placement consideration.
What "Good" Looks Like on Each Platform
On Xiaohongshu
Authenticity over production value. Real-skin photos, honest usage notes, personal context ("I have dry skin and live in Beijing where the air is harsh"). Overly polished brand content feels advertising-like and is scrolled past. The winning format is KOC seeding: 30–80 real users creating genuine notes about your product, each reaching their 1,000–10,000 followers.
On Douyin
Hook in the first 2 seconds. Chinese Douyin users are among the most scroll-habituated audiences in the world — if your video doesn't arrest attention immediately, it's gone. Formats that consistently work: before/after transformations, product demonstrations with satisfying results, "I tried this foreign brand so you don't have to" formats.
On WeChat
Value-first content. WeChat Official Account articles are long-form — users who open them expect substance. The brands that build strong WeChat followings post monthly deep-dives (ingredient science, brand history, usage guides) rather than promotional content. Conversion happens through WeChat mini-programs, which function as lightweight apps inside WeChat.
The Verification Gap
One thing foreign brands consistently underestimate: account verification in China requires a Chinese business license (营业执照) or a specific foreign company registration process. Without verification, your account has lower algorithmic visibility and no access to commercial features (in-stream shopping, ads). This process takes 4–8 weeks and must be factored into your launch timeline.
We handle verification for foreign entities as part of our launch work — it's one of the most consistently underplanned elements we see in brand entries.
Xiaohongshu
Douyin
